มีมหากาพย์เล่าขานถึงที่มาแห่งเทียนนี้ว่า ในกาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว ณเมืองสรอง พระเพื่อนพระแพงได้ไปพบปู่เจ้าสมิงพรายบนภูเขา เพื่อขอให้ปู่เจ้าช่วยทำเสน่ห์ให้พระลอหลงใหล

ปู่เจ้าสมิงพรายจึงได้เขียนยันต์ลงบนธงสามชาย แล้วติดไว้บนยอดต้นตะเคียน เมื่อลมพัดผ่านผ้า พระพายก็ได้พัดพาอักขระมนต์ลอยละลิ่วปลิวตามลมไปต้องตัวพระลอ แต่ปรากฏว่ามนต์นั้นก็ถูกแก้ให้เสื่อมคลายได้ เมื่อปู่เจ้าสมิงพรายทราบดังนั้นจึงได้ลงยันต์ใส่ผ้าแล้วนำขี้ผึ้งมาปั้นเป็นอิ่นคู่ชายหญิงกอดกัน แล้วบรรจุใส่ในตะกร้อ ก่อนนำไปแขวนไว้บนต้นไม้ พระลอก็ต้องมนต์อีกครั้งแต่ก็ถูกแก้ได้อีก

ในที่สุดปู่เจ้าสมิงพรายก็ต้องเปิดสุดยอดเคล็ดลับวิชาเทียนเสน่ห์มาใช้คือ "เทียนปู่เจ้าสมิงพราย" โดยปู่เจ้าสมิงพรายได้เขียนยันต์ลงบนกระดาษแล้วนำขี้ผึ้งมาฟั่นขึ้นเป็นเทียน ก่อนอัญเชิญพระเพลิงมาจุดไฟที่เทียนนั้น แล้วบริกรรมคาถาตลอดจนเทียนไหม้หมดเล่ม หลังจากนั้นปู่เจ้าสมิงพรายจึงได้นำขี้เถ้าและน้ำตาเทียนที่เหลืออยู่คลุกเคล้าผสมกับข้าวป้อนให้ไก่ฟ้ามากิน เพื่อไปล่อพระลอซึ่งกำลังประพาสป่าอยู่นั้น ต้องตามไก่ฟ้าตัวนี้มาจนเข้าเขตพระอุทยานเมืองสรอง และพบรักกับพระเพื่อนพระแพงในที่สุด

There is a epic talked about this candle that once upon a time in Srong city, Phra Peuan & Phra Pang went to meet Pujaw Samingprai on the mountain to beg Pujaw Samingprai for making charming magic to Phra Lor.

Pujaw Samingprai accept the Phra Peuan & Phra Pang's request and then wrote magic yant on the triangle flag and raised the flag to the top of Takien tree (Hopea Odorata). When the wind pass the flag through Phra Lor but, that magic was untied. Therefore, Pujaw Samingprai started to write magic Yant on a cloth and then used beeswax to cover that cloth and molded to be a couple love hug each others before contained it into rattan ball. Pujaw Samingprai hanged the rattan ball on the tree branch. Finally, Phra Lor was bewitched but, this time also was untied again.

Lastly, Pujaw Samingprai had to use the special subject of charming candle to bewitch Phra Lor. Pujaw Samingprai wrote a magic Yant on a paper and then used beeswax to cover the paper with a rope to be a candle for lighting. During the candle was burning, Pujaw Samingprai chanted Katha all the time until the charming candle was burnt completely. After that, Pujaw Samingprai took ashes and candle tears mixed with rice to feed a pheasant and released that it to the forest. When Phra Lor met that pheasant, Phra Lor walked follow it until reached the forest near Srong city. Finally, Phra Lor met Phra Peuan & Phra Pang and fall in love with them.
