ตามตำนานที่คนโบราณเล่าขานกันนั้น เชื่อถือกันว่าแมลงวันคำ จัดอยู่ในสัตว์พิเศษจำพวก ห้ำคำ และผีเสื้อทอง เปรียบเหมือนสัตว์เผือก ที่มีตบะอำนาจวาสนาบารมีเหนือกว่าสัตว์ทั้งหลาย จึงสันนิษฐานได้ว่าโบราณจารย์ยุคเก่าก่อนได้สังเกตถึงคุณลักษณะพิเศษของแมลงวันคำ จึงทำการรจนาผูกขึ้นมาเป็นวิชาเป็นตำหรับตำราขึ้นมา ส่งทอดจากรุ่นสู่รุ่นจนถึงปัจจุบัน ออกมาในรูปแบบของคาถาเลขยันต์ และวัตถุมงคล เพื่อหวังผลไปในทางเมตตามหาเสน่ห์ มหานิยมดึงดูด รวมไปถึงโชคลาภและโภคทรัพย์ อย่างไรก็ดี ศาสตร์วิชานี้ก็ใกล้ที่จะสาปสูญเต็มที เพราะมีผู้เชี่ยวชาญในวิชานี้น้อยมากจริงๆ ในบางท้องถิ่นก็ปรากฏว่ามีการนำยันต์แมงงุนคำ มาลงบนแผ่นโลหะ ทำเป็นตะกรุด เอาไว้พกติดตัว ขึ้นชื่อมากว่ามีแล้วทำมาหากินคล่องตัว ทั้งยังเป็นที่รักแก่คนทั้งหลาย เจ้านายจะเอ็นดูเป็นอย่างมาก และทำให้ได้เลื่อนขั้นเลื่อนตำแหน่งอย่างไว

สำหรับการสร้าง "ตะกรุดแมงวันคำ" นี้ ครูบาฐากูรได้นำแผ่นโลหะทองแดง มาจารเลขยันต์อักขระตามตำราแบบเต็มสูตร พร้อมเรียกสูตรเรียกนามในฤกษ์ยามเฉพาะ ถือเคล็ดว่า "ทองแดง" คือโลหะธาตุประจำดาวศุกร์ ดวงดาวแห่งความรัก จึงถือเป็นธาตุแห่งความสุข มีเสน่ห์ในตัว ซึ่งตามศาสตร์ความเชื่อของฝรั่ง ในสายเล่นแร่แปรธาตุก็ยังให้ความสำคัญกับเรื่องนี้เช่นกัน
