"องค์เอกะบาทาอิศวรอวตาร" เป็นหนึ่งในปางอวตารภาคหนึ่งแห่งองค์ศิวะเทพที่น้อยคนนักจะรู้จัก นับเป็นเทพโบราณดึกดำบรรพ์ รู้จักกันในหลายชื่อนาม แบ่งออกได้หลายภาค มีหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีเป็นเทวรูปหินแกะสลักสถิตอยู่ในเทวาลัยสถานแถบประเทศอินเดียและเนปาลหลายแห่ง
มักจะปรากฏในรูปลักษณ์ของเทพบุรุษผู้มี4กร 3ตา และหนึ่งตรีศูร ทรงมีพระนารายณ์อยู่เบื้องซ้าย และพระพรหมอยู่เบื้องขวา ยืนตรงตั้งตระหง่านด้วยขาเพียงข้างเดียว บางรูปเคารพของท่านจะเปิดเผยให้เห็นถึงศิวลึงค์ที่ตั้งชี้ชูชันอีกด้วย
พระศิวะในภาคที่ยืนขาเดียวนี้ มีนัยยะคติความเชื่อทางลัทธิไศวนิกายรวมไปถึงลัทธิลึงค์ยัติ หมายถึงพระศิวะทรงเป็นพระเจ้าสูงสุดและทรงเป็นเสาหลักของจักรวาล ดั่งเขาพระสุเมรุอันเป็นที่ประทับอาศัยแห่งทวยเทพทั้งปวง และยังมีนัยยะหมายถึง "ศิวลึงค์" อันเป็นสัญลักษณ์แทนองค์ศิวะพระผู้เป็นเจ้าผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ มหาเทพผู้สถิตบนยอดเขาไกรลาส เทพเคารพสูงสุดของศาสนาพราหมณ์ และต้นกำเนิดชีวิตผู้ประทานความอุดมสมบูรณ์
สันนิษฐานว่า ที่รูปเคารพของ "องค์เอกะบาทาอิศวรอวตาร" มีลักษณะดั่งที่กล่าวมานั้น มาจากตำนานหนึ่งที่เล่าขานกันว่า "พระศิวะทรงเป็นผู้สร้างพระนารายณ์และพระพรหม" ตำนานนั้นมีอยู่ว่ากาลครั้งหนึ่งเมื่อจักรวาลยังคงดูว่างเปล่า ขณะที่พระนารายณ์ทรงบรรทมสินธุ์อยู่ท่ามกลางเกษียรสมุทร ได้เกิดมีดอกบัวผุดออกมาจากสะดือ
ภายในดอกบัวนั้นมีพระพรหมอาศัยอยู่ เมื่อดอกบัวบานออก พระพรหมก็ได้ออกมารังสรรค์สร้างสรรพสิ่งต่างๆในจักรวาลรวมถึงดาวโลกอันเป็นที่อยู่ของสรรพชีวิต พอถึงเวลาที่พระนารายณ์ทรงตื่นจากบรรทม จึงเกิดการถกเถียงกันในประเด็นที่ว่า "ผู้ใดเป็นผู้สร้างโลกที่แท้จริง" พระพรหมก็บอกว่าตนเป็นผู้สร้าง ในขณะเดียวกัน พระนารายณ์ก็บอกว่าตนเป็นผู้สร้างเพราะพระพรหมเกิดมาจากสะดือของตน
ระหว่างที่เทพทั้ง2ถกเถียงกันอยู่นั้น ก็พลันบังเกิดมีอวัยวะเพศชายขนาดใหญ่ยักษ์มหึมา เรียกว่าเป็น "อภิมหาศิวลึงค์" ก็คงไม่ผิด บางตำนานเล่าว่าเป็นอวัยวะเพศชายที่มีดวงตาแห่งการหยั่งรู้อันมีเพลิงที่สามารถทำลายล้างทุกสิ่งเป็นตาที่สามกลางหน้าผาก วัตถุน่าศวงนั้นอุบัติขึ้นแทรกกลางระหว่างการเฟ้นหาผู้ชนะระหว่างเทพทั้งสอง ว่ากันว่าขนาดของอวัยเพศชายแท่งนั้นยิ่งใหญ่ยากจะประมาณขนาดได้ พระนารายณ์และพระพรหมจึงตกลงกันว่า หากใครหาจุดยอดหรือส่วนฐานของอวัยวะเพศชายนั้นเจอก่อน ผู้นั้นคือผู้สร้างโลกที่แท้จริง
ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า แม้พระนารายณ์จะแปลงกายเป็นหมูป่าขุดทะลวงผืนพสุธาเพื่อลงไปหาส่วนฐาน ในขณะที่พระพรหมได้เแปลงกายเป็นหงส์บินทะยานนภาอากาศเพื่อหาส่วนยอด เมื่อเวลาผ่านไปกว่าพันปีแล้ว เทพทั้งสองก็ยังไม่สามารถหาขอบเขตของอวัยเพศชายนั้นได้เลย เพราะส่วนล่างก็หยั่งรากลงลึกจนหาจุดปลายที่สิ้นสุดไม่เจอ ส่วนบนก็พุ่งขึ้นสุดขอบจักรวาลหาจนหาจุดยอดไม่ได้
ท้ายที่สุด เวลาอันสมควรก็มาถึง เพราะการแข่งขันว่าใครเป็นผู้สร้างโลกเป็นอันต้องสิ้นสุด เมื่อพระศิวะทรงแสดงตัวขึ้นว่าอภิมหาศิวลึงค์แท่งนั้นคือองค์ท่านเอง เมื่อนั้นพระนารายณ์และพระพรหมก็พลันได้สติฉุกคิดได้ว่า แม้ตนเองจะเป็นเทพที่ยิ่งใหญ่แต่ก็ไม่ใช่เทพที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดในจักรวาล ใครเป็นผู้สร้างโลกนั้นไม่สำคัญ แต่ที่สำคัญคือใครเป็นผู้สร้างเรา เทพทั้งสองจึงหยุดแข่งขันกัน แล้วจึงแสดงความเคารพบูชาต่อองค์พระศิวะ
องค์ศิวะมหาเทพทรงพอพระทัยกับการเคารพบูชาของเทพทั้งสอง แล้วจึงกล่าวว่า แท้จริงแล้วพระนารายณ์และพระพรหมก็ล้วนเกิดมาจากตน พระนารายณ์และพระพรหมได้ฟังดังนั้นจึงก้มลงกราบสาธุการแด่มหาเทพพร้อมกัน หลังจากเหตุการณ์นี้มา ศิวลึงค์จึงได้กลายเป็นหนึ่งในรูปเคารพที่ยิ่งใหญ่และศักดิ์สิทธิ์ที่สุดของเหล่ามนุษย์ผู้ต่ำต้อย จนไปถึงทวยเทพผู้สูงส่ง
บางตำนานก็กล่าวว่า "องค์เอกะบาทาอิศวรอวตาร" ท่านเป็นเทพเจ้าที่ลึกลับที่สุดองค์หนึ่งที่เกิดจากการอวตารของพระศิวะ ถือความสันโดษเป็นที่สุด แม้ในหมู่ปวงเทพด้วยกันก็แทบไม่เป็นที่รู้จัก ว่ากันว่าในท้องฟ้าไม่มีใครไวกว่าท่าน ท่านทรงเป็นเทพที่มีความปราดเปรียวว่องไวเป็นอย่างมากประดุจลมพายุ โดยเฉพาะเวลาที่ท่านเหาะเหินเดินอากาศเสด็จไปในที่ต่างๆ แม้จะใช้เพียงพระบาทเดียวก็ตาม
นอกจากนี้ในลัทธิศักติแบบฮินดูตันตระ มีคติความเชื่อหนึ่งที่ว่าหากต้องการรอดชีวิต ต้องหาอีกอำนาจมาถ่วงดุล ยามปกติ "อธรรม" ต้องถูกล้างด้วย "ธรรมมะ" ทว่าในวิกฤติบางสถานการณ์ คงต้องล้าง "อธรรม" ด้วย "อธรรม" อีกแบบหนึ่ง คือเมื่อความดีไม่สามารถเอาชนะความเลวได้ ก็ถึงคราวที่มหาเทพต้องจำแลงเป็นปางโหดร้าย เพื่อปราบสิ่งชั่วร้ายกว่า...
เมื่่อถึงคราวที่พระศิวะต้องลงมาปราบเหล่าอสูรหมู่มาร ก็จะทรงอวตารเป็น "องค์เอกะบาทาไภรวะ" เทพอสูรที่มีพระพักตร์ดุร้ายและอาวุธครบมือ มักถือกลอง บ่วง ตรีศูล และหัวกะโหลก ชาวฮินดูจึงเคารพนับถือบูชาท่านในฐานะเทพที่มีพลังทำลายล้างสูงที่สุดองค์หนึ่ง ในตำนานกล่าวว่าเมื่อพระองค์ทรงพิโรธ แรงกระทืบจากพระบาทเดียวของท่าน สามารถทำให้ทั้งพิภพสั่นสะเทือนถึงขั้นแผ่นดินแยกพสุธาไหวเลยทีเดียว

"Ekapada Shiva Avatar" is one of the lesser known incarnations of God Shiva. He is an ancient deity who has been known by many names and can be divided into several aspects. There are many archaeological evidences of his image in rock carved stone sculpture in the ancient temples of India and Nepal.
"Ekapada Shiva Avatar" is usually seen in the form of a male deity who has 4 arms, 3 eyes and 1 trident with one leg. He has Vishnu on his left. and Brahma on the right Stand tall with only one leg. Some rock carved stone sculptures of "Ekapada Shiva Avatar" will also reveal the lingam that is pointing to the upright.
Lord Shiva in this one-legged aspect has many meanings to describe in the beliefs of Shaivism including Lingayat Cult. For examples, Shiva is the supreme god and the cosmic pillar of this entire universe like as Mount Meru, the dwelling place of all gods. There is also a connotation of "Lingam" which symbolizes the great Lord Shiva, the Great God who lives on the top of Mount Kailash, the most revered deity of Brahmanism, the origin of life and the giver of abundance.
It is assumed that the sculpture of "Ekapada Shiva Avatar" has characteristics as mentioned above comes from a legend that "Shiva Is The Creator Of Vishnu & Brahma". The legend goes that once upon a time when the universe still seemed empty. While Vishnu was sleeping in the middle of "Kshira Sagara", the Ocean of Milk, there was a lotus flower sprouted from the navel of Vishnu.
That fragrant white lotus flower has "Brahma" inside. When the lotus flower bloom, Brahma came out to create all things in the universe, including the planet earth which is the habitat of all life. By the time Vishnu woke up from the very long time sleep, there was a debate on the issue of "Who Is The Truely Creator Of The World?". Brahma said that he was the creator meanwhile Vishnu also said that he was the creator because Brahma was born from his navel.
While the two gods were arguing. Suddenly, there was a huge, gigantic penis, known as "The Great Lingam", some legends said that it was a penis with the fiery "Eye Of Providence" that could destroy everything as the third eye in the middle of its forehead. That mysterious object happened to intervene in the middle of the match to find the winner between the two gods. It is said that the size of that penis is so huge & difficult to estimate its size. Then, Vishnu and Brahma agreed that if anyone can find the vertex or base of the penis first, that person is the true creator of the world.
According to legend, even Vishnu transformed into a boar, digging down through the land to find the base while Brahma transformed into a swan, soaring through the air to find the top. After more than a thousand years, the two gods were still unable to find the extent of that Great Lingam. Because the lower part rooted so deeply that the end cannot be found while the upper part rose to the edge of the universe until unable to find its peak.
Finally, the right time has arrived because the competition of who created the world has to end. When Lord Shiva showed himself that "The Great Lingam" is himself. Then, Vishnu and Brahma suddenly realized that although they are the powerful god, but they are not the greatest god in the universe, who created the world doesn't matter but more importantly, who created us?. Therefore, the two gods stopped competing and showed respect to Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva was pleased with the worship of the two gods. Then, Lord Shiva said "Indeed, Both Of You Were All Born From Me". After Vishnu and Brahma heard Lord Shiva's speech, they bowed down to pay homage to the greatest god together. After this event, "Lingam" became one of the greatest and most sacred religious idols of the lowly humans until the lofty gods.
Some legends said "Ekapada Shiva Avatar" is one of the most mysterious deities who born from the incarnation of Lord Shiva. He prefered the utmost solitude. Even among the gods, he was almost unknown. It is said that there is no one faster in the sky than him. He was a god who was as agile as a storm. especially when he flies in the air and goes in different places even if using only one foot.
